CAPTAIN ROSS [1]. Scottish, Reel (cut time). A Mixolydian (Young): A Major (most versions): G Major (Aird, Howe, Manson). Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Athole, Gow): AABB (Aird, Bremner, Howe, Manson, Young): AABB' (Kerr). The tune appears in the Bodleian Manuscript, residing in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. It is inscribed "A Collection of the Newest Country Dances Performed in Scotland written by D.A. Young, W.M. 1740". Edinburgh fiddler and writing master Young also included it in his MacFarlane Manuscript (c. 1741, No. 101, p. 145). Glen (1891), evidently not knowing of the earlier publication, finds the earliest printing of the tune in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection. Alexander McGlashan printed it in his 1780 collection under the title "Earl of Seaforth's Reel (The)." Boston publisher Elias Howe printed it in his section of Irish Airs in his Musician's Omnibus No. 3 (1865).
