LITTLE DIAMOND [1]. American, Dance Tune (2/4 or 4/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Listed as a 'jig' in Ryan's Mammoth Collection, referring to a type of duple-time, syncopated 19th century old-time banjo tune and solo dance, rather than the more familiar Irish jig in 6/8 time. Tunes such as this were often called "straight" or "sand" jigs (the latter from the practice of spreading sand on a stage floor to reduce friction). Most sand jigs appear to have been vehicles for stage dancers of the latter 19th century.
