MR. GEORGE JENKIN’S STRATHSPEY. Scottish, Strathspey. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by Niel Gow, Jr. (c. 1795-1823), the son of Nathaniel Gow and the grandson of family scion Niel Gow. The younger Niel briefly joined his father’s music publishing firm, and was showing great promise as a talented performer and composer before his untimely death. His father collected and published his son’s compositions in a Collection of Slow Airs, Strathspeys and Reels, being the Posthumous Compositions of the late Niel Gow, Junior, dedicated to the Right Honourable, the Earl of Dalhousie, by his much obliged servant, Nathaniel Gow (Edinburgh, 1849). The strathspey is perhaps named after George Jenkins (c. 1760-1806), who “followed the profession of a teacher of Scotch dancing in London about the year 1794, at which date (1793 is also given) he probably published his collection New Scotch Music, consisting of Slow Airs, Strathspeys, Quick Reels, Country Dance & a Medley on a New Plan with a Bass for violoncello or Harpsichord etc., dedicated to the Prince of Wales. We are not aware of his nationality…” (John Glen, 1895).
