CHAPLET. English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A popular melody printed in several 18th century country dance collections, beginning with John Johnson's Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances (London, 1751). This was followed by appearances in Walsh's Compleat Country Dancing Master, vol. 5 (London, 1754), David Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (London, 1756), Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 collection, and James Aird's Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 3 (Glasgow, 1788). It was also penned by London musician Thomas Hammersley into his 1790 music manuscript collection.
