BISBEE'S WALTZ. American, Waltz (3/4 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABBCC. Jasper "Jep" Bisbee (1843-1935) was a fiddler from Paris, Michigan, whose family had rural New York roots. He was in his 80's when he was "discovered" by Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone during their annual camping trip, whilst playing at a Paris, Michigan dance in 1923. Impressed, Edison offered him a recording contract. The tune's second strain recalls "Copenhagen Waltz" in Mr. & Mrs. Henry Ford's Good Morning collection, says Bronner (1987). Ford's square dance band, consisting of Clayton Perry (fiddle), Edwin F. Baxter (dulcimer), William Hallup (cimbalom) and Maurice Castel (sousaphone), recorded the waltz for Columbia records in 1927.
