CIRCUS [2], THE. AKA and see "Charles Street Walk." English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Charles and Samuel Thompson printed a country dance to this tune called "Charles Street Walk" in their Twenty Four Country Dances (London, 1772). It appears as "The Circus" in the American music manuscript collections of Captain George Bush (Pennsylvania & Delaware, 1779-1789), keyboard player Elizabeth Van Rensselaer (Boston, 1782), and flute player Henry Beck (1786).

Philip Astley is credited with creating the first circus in London in the latter 18th century.
