COUNTESS OF WEMYSS' REEL (THE). Scottish, Reel (cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The Countess of Wemyss at the time of McKercher's c. 1830 publication was Margaret (c. 1780-1850), wife of Francis Wemyss (1772-1853), Lord Elcho (later 8th Earl of Wemyss). She was the fourth daughter of Walter Campbell, 9th of Skipness and 3rd of Shawfield, and was the sister of Ladies Ruthven and Belhaven, and aunt of the Countesses of Uxbridge and Charleville. Francis and Margaret had one surviving son and four surviving daughters of eight children at the time of her death.
