DEVIL IN THE HAYSTACK. Old-Time, Breakdown. USA; Indiana, Illinois. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB. Southern Illinois fiddler Gary Harrison does a version of the tune learned from Harvey "Pappy" Taylor (1894-1987) of Effingham, Ill, recorded in the source's home in Effingham, Illinois, on May 6, 1975. Taylor learned to play from his grandfather, and absorbed many of his tunes from local sources, and credited Joe Dixon, a former circus fiddler, as a source of other pieces that he played. Taylor also lived for a time in West Virginia, where he learned tunes from his cousins.
