DOCTOR JOHN McLAGAN'S STRATHSPEY. Scottish, Strathspey. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Malcolm MacDonald (c. 1740-1800), the melody first appears in his Collection of Strathspey Reels, vol. 1 (c. 1788), dedicated to Mrs. Baird of Newbyth. The tune is named for Dr. John McLagan (c. 1750-1831), who was for many years physician to the Earl of Breadalbane, and surgeon to the Royal Highland Local Militia. He died in 1831 at Glenquaich House, Forfarshire, aged 81.
