DUCHESS OF ATHOLE'S REEL [1]. AKA - "Tuigainn Dachaidh Null 'n Àird." Scottish, Reel (4/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABCC. The reel appears as "Dutchess of Athole's Reell" in Angus Cumming's collection of 1782. Cumming (c. 1750-c. 1800) was from a long line of Speyside musicians. William Lamb[1] points out the word strathspey only appears in the title of his collection, and not with any of the tunes themselves; "the tunes were simply all 'Old Highland reels' to him." The boundary between what we think of as reels versus the syncopated strathspey was much more permeable to Cumming. Lamb gives the corrected form of Cumming's Gaelic title as "Tuigainn Dachaidh Null 'n Àird" (Come Home by Way of the 'Ard'"). Michael Newton, writing in his blog "The Origins of the Strathspey: A Rebuttal"[2] believes the correct Scots Gaelic title of Cumming's "Tuggin ta'chi n'ul 'n Aird" should be "Tiugainn dachaidh nill dha'n Àird."
