EMMETT'S QUICKSTEP. American, Quickstep (2/4 time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. This march was composed by Daniel Decatur Emmett [1] (1815-1904), of blackface minstrel fame, the prolific composer of "Dixie" and numerous other songs. However, Emmett became an expert fifer and drummer at Newport Barracks, Newport, Kentucky, with the 6th Infantry, U.S. Army, as a young man. He was discharged in 1835. He contributed the fife instructor to his publication with George B. Bruce, who had been a drum major and instructor at the garrisons at Bedloe's and Goernor's Islands, in New York City harbor.
