GRAPE VINE TWIST HORNPIPE. American, Hornpipe (2/4 time). E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Grape Vine Twist Hornpipe" was composed by P.B. Isaacs and first printed in blackface minstrel musician and composer George H. Coes' Coes Album of Jigs and Reels (1876). The Grape Vine Twist was a minstrel era dance or series of dance steps. Composer P.B. Isaacs and his brother R.C.B. Isaacs performed as The Isaacs Brothers, and were members of various minstrel organizations, including Woods Minstrels, Hussey & Taylor's "Original" California Minstrels, White's Melodeon, Bryant's Minstrels, and Seaver & Coes' (where George Coes came into contact with the Isaacs, if he had not done so prior, in California).

Edward Le Roy Rice, in his Monarchs of Minstrelsy (1911) records:

P. B. Isaacs was one of the early minstrel leaders, and a fine musician. He was one of the original members of Bryant's Minstrels in New York at their opening, February 23, 1857. He was born in London, England, 1831; he died in San Francisco, September 6, 1865.

The second strain is borrowed from the second strain of the "Harvest Home (1)" family of tunes.
