HE RAMBLED.AKA - "Didn't He Ramble." American, Song and Instrumental (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "He Rambled" is a song from Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers, recorded for Columbia records in 1929. Fiddler Lonnie Austin (1905-1997), originally from Leaksville, North Carolina, replaced the groups original fiddler, Posey Rorer, Charlie Poole's brother-in-law with whom Poole had a falling out. Austin was a keyboard, guitar and fiddleplayer who played in a longbow style and was a much sought after session fiddler for N.C. and Va. Piedmont string bands. In addition to playing with Poole, Austin also recorded with Kelly Harrell's Virginia String Band. He played with Poole for two years, and was replaced by Odell Smith.

My mother raised three grown sons, Buster, Bill, and I,
Buster was the black sheep of our little family;
Mother tried to break him of his rough and rowdy ways,
Finally had to get the judge to give him ninety days.

And didn't he ramble, ramble,
He rambled all around, in and out the town;
And didn't he ramble, ramble,
He rambled till the butchers cut him down.
