JOVIAL CLOWNS, THE. AKA - "Country Courtship (Ye)." English, Country Dance Tune (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. In addition to Daniel Wright's 1740 country dance collection (printed in London by John Johnson), the melody appears in John Walsh's Compleat Country Dancing-Master, Volume the Third (London, 1749, p. 124). It was reprinted by Johnson in 1744 in his A Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol 3 (London, 1744, p. 86, as "Jovial Clown"). "Jovial Clowns, or Ye Country Courtship" was printed on a single songsheet in the early 18th century (now part of the Folger Collection). It begins: "When the flaggon I behold...".
