MRS. CHARLES STEWART--PETTYVAICH. AKA - "Mrs. Charlie Stewart's Reel." Scottish (originally), Canadian; Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Cranford, Marshall): AB (Honeyman). Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833), a famous fiddler and composer known for his strathspeys. Marshall was the Steward of the Household for the Duke of Gordon, an enthusiastic supporter and patron of Marshall’s music. Paul Stewart Cranford (1995) remarks that some of Marshall tunes have been in oral tradition so long in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, that local sets have evolved; this is one such piece. Cape Breton fiddler Donald MacLellan first recorded this popular tune of LP (Cranford, 1997).
