NANTASKET HORNPIPE, THE. American, Hornpipe or Reel (2/4 or cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Nantasket Reel" was composed by blackface minstrel composer and performer George H. Coes and was printed in his Coes Album of Jigs and Reels (1876). It became "Nantasket Hornpipe" in Scottish violinist Laybourn's c. 1883 volume. Nantasket is a Native American word derived from Wampanoag and means "at the strait" "low-tide place" or "where tides meet" and was applied to the coast around Hull, Massachusetts, located on a peninsula. 'Nantasket' survives as the name of a Massachusetts beach, resort, and amusement area, popular from the latter 19th century.
