The melody appears in the Rowallan lute manuscript of c. 1620, named for Sir William Mure of Rowallan. Inscribed in the cover is, "my lade bekluch [Beccleuch] her book," which may or may not indicate the volume was intended for, or compiled by, this individual, as there is no way to determine when it was added.
