The melody appears in print under this title in Glasgow publisher James Aird’s Selections of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, vol. 1 (1782, p. 47). It can also be found in the music manuscripts of Joseph Barnes (1762, Carlisle, Cumbria) and William Clarke (Feltwell, Norfolk, 1858), and, as “May Day,” in H.S.J. Jackson’s 1823 Lancashire ms. See also the tune under the title “England's Glory” in the John Clare (1793-1864) music manuscript.
