PURLONGS, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (3/2 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB: AABB (Playford). The melody and dance instructions ("Longways for as many as will") for "The Purlongs" were first printed by Henry Playford () in 1696 in The Dancing Master Part II, the supplement to the 9th edition of the long-running series. The country dance was retained in subsequent Dancing Master volumes through the 18th and final edition of 1728 (then published by John Young, heir to the Playford publishing concerns). It was also published by rival London publisher John Walsh in his various publications, including The Compleat Country Dancing Master, editions of 1718, 1731 and 1754.
