RED FOX WALTZ. Old-Time, Waltz. USA, Missouri. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. According to Vivian Williams during the 1960's the tune became popular for a time at the Weiser, Idaho, national fiddle contest, played and popularized by fiddlers originally from Missouri where it is a frequently heard waltz. Taylor McBain (1910–1994, Columbia, Missouri) has been singled out for having one of the finest renditions of the tune. The waltz has been attributed to fiddler Harold Allen (1925–2012), originally from Nebraska but who later lived in Oregon where he was active in the Idaho and Oregon old-time fiddlers' associations.
