RUBEN [1]. English, Country Dance Tune (whole time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Ruben [1]" appears with directions for a country dance ("Longways for as many as will") in all four editions of John Young's The Second Volume of the Dancing Master [1], published in London between 1710 and 1728, and also was printed in John Walsh's Second Book of the New Country Dancing Master (London, 1710, p. 78). The melody was also used as the vehicle for an air in John Gay's ballad opera Polly (1729), the follow-up to his hugely successful Beggar's Opera of the previous year.
