Composed in 1947 by Shetland fiddler, composer, teacher, and authority biography:Tom Anderson (1910-1991), born in Eshaness on the northwestern mainland of Shetland. The tune name comes from the six-oared fishing boats, sixereens (or, as pronounced in Shetland, sixeren) of the Shetland Islands, which are shaped like a Norse galley, and Anderson composed the tune "after viewing the remains of a sixereen [1] on the Hillswick beach which, in its later life, had been used as a flit boat in Hillswick" (Anderson).
