SPRING GARDENS HORNPIPE [1]. English, Hornpipe (whole time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Spring Gardens Hornpipe" was entered into several English musicians' manuscript collections of the first half of the 19th century, including those of Rev. R. Harrison (Cumbria, c. 1815, where it appears as an untitled hornpipe), Lawrence Leadley (Yorkshire, c. 1850), and a ms. perhaps written by J. Lishman (c. 1825), part of the Browne Family collection (Lakes District). However, the original printed source for these hornpipes has as yet not been uncovered. The note with Lishman's manuscript copy says: "A favorite hornpipe", a phrase often printed as a kind of advertising on single sheet issues, and would point to a published copy.

There is a Spring Gardens street in St. James's, London that crosses the east end of the Mall, named after the gardens previously built on the site in the time of Elizabeth I.

See also Francis O'Neill's derivative "Spring Garden (1) (The)," and the family of variant tunes in the Elias Howe publications (see "Norton's Favorite").
