STEPHENSON’S MONUMENT. English, Hornpipe (cut time). E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Stephenson's Monument is a statue in Newcastle, northern England, erected in 1862 that honors engineer George Stephenson (1741-1848), a railway pioneer. It was designed by John Graham Lough with a main bronze casting, and, on the sandstone plynth, four smaller statues depicting Stephenson in his achievements as a bridge builder, blacksmith, miner and railroad engineer. His son Robert designed the High Level Bridge (see note for “High Level Hornpipe (1)”).

"Stephenson's Monument" is a member of a large and varied hornpipe family--see note for "annotation:Captain John's Hornpipe" for more.
