TRIP TO NETHERBY. English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. This country dance tune was copied by folklorist Anne Geddes Gilchrist from an anonymous musician's manuscript from Cumbria, dated c. 1812, now called the Carlisle Manuscript [1]. The original ms. disappeared, and only Gilchrist's copy survived of 22 of the 73 tunes it was said to have contained. "A Trip to Netherby" was attributed in the ms. to "Mr. Hill." The melody also appears in the 1840 music manuscript collection of multi-instrumentalist John Rook, of Waverton, near Wigton, Cumbria.

The title probably refers to Netherby Hall, Cumbria, on the Scottish border, held by the Graham family for 400 years, now restored by Landmark Trust. It is located on the site of the Roman fort of Castra Exploratorum. The old house incorporated a 15th century pele tower (said to have been built from Roman stone) and was successively added to over several centuries.
