TRIP TO THE BOAR, A. English, Country Dance Tune and Triple Hornpipe (3/2 time). E Minor (Young): D Minor (Williamson). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "A Trip to the Boar" was first published in the Second Volume of the Dancing Master, 3rd and 4th editions (1718 and 1728), and also can be found in John Walsh's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing-Master (London, 1719, p. 360). Robin Williamson assumes the title refers to "a visit to the local tavern." There was a famous Boar's Head Tavern in Eastcheap in the City of London, supposedly the meeting place of Sir John Falstaff, Prince Hal and other characters in Shakespeare's Henry IV plays. The building was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, but was rebuilt and served its former purpose until late in the 18th century.
