WOOD CUTTERS [1]. American, March and Jig (6/8 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in numerous New England musicians’ manuscripts from the latter 18th and early 19th centuries, including the commonplace or copybooks of fifer Thomas Nixon (c. 1776, Danbury, Conn.), Morris Woodruff (1803, Litchfield, Conn.), Luther Kingsley (1795c. 1815, Mansfield, Conn.), Abel Shattuck (1801-c. 182?, Colrain, Mass.), and flute player Elias Boynton (1799, Pepperell, Mass.). It was published in American publications such as Samuel Holyoke’s Instrumental Assistant, vol. 1 (1800, p. 38, Exeter, N.H.) and Charles Robbins’ Drum and Fifer Instructor (1812, Exeter, N.H.).
