YONDER COMES A COURTEOUS KNIGHT. English, Ballad Air (6/4 time). G Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. The air, one of King Henry's Mirth or Freemen's Songs, appears in Thomas Ravenscroft's (c.1582-c.1635) Deuteromelia [1] (1609) and Pills to Purge Melancholy (1698). c.f "The Baffled Knight: or The Lady’s Policy” [Roxburgh Ballads, ii. 281]) and the Child ballad "Blow Away the Morning Dew." The ballad begins:

Yonder comes a courteous Knight,
Lustily raking over the hay,
He was well ’ware of a bonny lass,
As she came wandering over the way:

Cho:
Then she sang down a down,
Hey down derry.
Then she sang down a down,
Hey down derry.
