ANGRY PEELER, THE. Irish, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A 'peeler' was, and still sometimes is, a slang term for a policeman in the British Isles, and in America until about 1890. A version was entered as an untitled jig in Book 3 of the large music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894). See also the related "Fardown Farmer (The)" in O'Neill's Music of Ireland (1903), as well as "Boys of Thomastown (The)," "Caffler's Courtship (The)," "Away to the Bogs," "Father O'Carroll" and others. "Joe Cooley's Jig" and "Green Fields of Miltron (The)" also appear to share related melodic material.
