DAVE MARSH'S FAVORITE. AKA and see "Boys of Ballyscally (The)," "Irish Jig (1)." Canadian, Jig (6/8 time). Canada, Cape Breton. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Dunlay & Reich): AA'BB' (Dunlay & Greenberg). The title "Dave Marsh's Favorite" comes from pianist Doug MacPhee, who named it after a friend although the tune was not composed by him. Another Cape Breton musician, Buddy MacMaster, recorded it without a title. The tune is actually an untitled "Irish Jig (1)" first printed in Edinburgh in Köhler's Violin Repository vol. 3 (c. 1885, p. 268) where it is clearly attributed to a "John B. Easton, Edinburgh," who contributed a few compositions to editor W.B. Laybourn's "Köhler's" volumes. A nearly identical version can be found in Book 4 of the early 20th century music manuscript collection of musician Bernard Bogue (c. 1863-1930, County Tyrone & County Monaghan) under the title "Boys of Ballyscally (The)."
