The tune was included by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, fiddler and composer biography:Robert Petrie (1767-1830) in his 2nd Collection of Strathspey Reels and Country Dances (1796), described as "An auld Tune". Delgaty Castle is an old castle building near Turiff, Aberdeenshire. The original castle that was on the site was built around the year 1030, but the existing structure was constructed in the 16th century, with additional wings and a chapel added in 1743. The castle was part of the family estates of Francis Garden-Campbell of Troup and Glenlyon, for whom Petrie worked as groundskeeper and gamekeeper.
