DIN TARRANT'S [1]. AKA and see "I Have a Bonnet Trimmed with Blue (1)." Irish, Polka (2/4 time). Ireland, Sliabh Luachra region of the Cork-Kerry border. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Denis "Din" Tarrant (1871-1957) was a Sliabh Luachra regional fiddler and traveling carpenter, who hailed from Ballydesmond. He was a contemporary of Sliabh Luachra fiddlers Tom Billy Murphy and Pádraig O'Keeffe, and, like Tom Billy, was taught by peripatetic fiddler Tadghín an Asail (Tadeen the Donkey, Tadeen the Fiddler)[1]. He was an exponent of the "house party" style of fiddling (i.e. less ornamentation in the left-hand, less slurring with the bow) as contrasted with the now more famous Sliabh Luachra style of fiddling typified by Pádraig O'Keeffe, Dennis Murphy and Julie Clifford (the latter the children of Tom Billy Murphy). Tarrant lived in London for a time, where he was part of Irish music scene in the early 20th century, and may have been exposed to other influences in his playing. However, he did not record, nor was he the subject of collector's efforts later in life, with the result that his own influence--perhaps considerable--is overshadowed by other regional musicians (particularly Pádraig O'Keeffe).
