DONCASTER HORNPIPE, THE. English, Hornpipe. The melody comes from the playing of English concertina player Gordon Cutty (Kelloe, near Ferryhill, outside Durham), who was recorded by Peter Kennedy in 1954. At the time, the 54 year old Cutty, who had been miner by trade and was then a surface laborer, was still playing for old fashioned dances in a local band. Cutty learned his instrument from the playing of his father, also a concertinist, and had a repertoire that included local hornpipes composed by William Graham of South Hetton, a friend of his father's and a violinist and composer of local renown [Kennedy].
