Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in Joshua Campbell's A Collection of New Reels & Highland Strathspeys (1788, p. 72). The tune was entered as "Duckets sits down" in the large 1840 music manuscript collection of multi-instrumentalist John Rook (Waverton, Cumbria).
