FÊTE CHAMPÊTRE. AKA and see "Corporation (The)." English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appears in Charles and Samuel Thompson's Complete Collection, vol. 4 (London, 1780). A different melody by the same name appears in the disparate music manuscript collections of London musician Thomas Hammersley (c. 1790), and Seabrook, New Hampshire musician Jeremiah Brown (c. 1782). A Fête Champêtre was a kind of 18th century garden party [1], although the title may refer to the famous Fête Champêtre held in 1774 to celebrate the approaching nuptials of Edward Smith Stanley, future 12th Earl of Derby and Lady Elizabeth (Betty) Hamilton, daughter of the 6th Duke of Hamilton and the subsequent Duchess of Argyll. Lord Kelly composed much of the music for the event.
