The tonality is blurred to a great extent between minor and major versions (often A mixolydian/d mixolydian), as the 'C' note can be either sharped or natural. An early version of the reel can be found in the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Siabh Luachra musician D. Curtin (No. 38, p. 15 [1]) under the title "Lasses of Bally Cahill."
