FRENCH WALTZ [3], THE. Old-Time. USA, Cumberland Plateau region of Ky./ Tenn. border. A banjo tune, but not a waltz, played in the unusual gBbFBbD tuning. Old Time musicians usually source the tune to Cylde Troxell, of Rocky Branch, Kentucky. It apparently was a locally popular tune played by many in the area (including W.L. Gregory and Virgil Anderson), and had alternate titles. Troxell maintained that the tune was brought back from the First World War by veteran Jeff Gregory, who learned it from Frenchman who played the banjo.
