GARLAND DANCE, THE. English, Scottische (?). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. According to Simpson and Roud (Dictionary of English Folklore, 2000) garlands were common elements of English customs, often displayed at May Day (where they were carried around the village) and at Christmas-time, at weddings, and funerals. Garland dancing was popular in 19th century mill towns in the North of England, as the industrial revolution resulted in a migration from rural areas to cities.
