GENTLEMAN THIEF, THE. English, Jig and Air (Irregular time - 'A' part is in 6/8 time, 'B' part in 9/8). England, Northumberland. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB. The tune is attached to a song in which a simple farmer eludes a highwayman by subterfuge. Confronted on the highway, the farmer claims his money is stitched into his saddlebags, which he promptly throws over a hedge. The highwayman has no choice but to investigate, and, by the time he has determined the pouch to be worthless, the farmer has made his escape.
