GLENLYON'S PIPER. AKA and see "Glenlyon (1)." Scottish, Reel (whole time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title refers to Glenlyon piper High MacKenzie, who is reported to have piped "A Breadalbane rant in triumph" as a postscript to Captain Robert Campbell 5th of Glenlyon's winter massacre of the Glencoe MacDonalds in 1692. As well, it is also traditionally said the march known as "Breadalbane's March" and the "Wives of the Glen," was played by Glenlyon's piper early on the morning of the fatal event to warn the MacDonalds. The very next tune after "Glenlyon's Piper" in Lowe's collection is "Captain Campbell."

Fr. John Quinn identifies this tune as a relative, probably derivative, of "Haughs of Cromdale (The)," a large and complex tune family (see notes at "annotation:Haughs of Cromdale (The)").
