GOING TO JAIL. American, Country Rag (cut time). USA, Kentucky. G Major (Brody, Phillips): C Major (New Lost City Ramblers). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABB (Brody): AA'BB' (Phillips). A ragtime fiddle piece composed around the E, A, D, G chord turn, attributed to Kentucky fiddler Ted Gossett (1904-1990, Muhlenberg County, Ky.). It was one of six sides Gossett's band recorded for Gennett Records in September, 1930, and fiddler Tom Whitmer (b. 1886) replaced Gossett for this number. Confusingly, Tom Whitmer's Band also recorded three sides for Gennett on the same day, featuring fiddler Whitmer playing with the same personnel as Gossett's band -- Enos Gossett (gtr.), Pete Woods (banjo) and Earl Nossinger (gtr.). "Going to Jail," credited to the group's pseudonym 'Buddy Young's Kentuckians' on the record label, was issued only on the poorly distributed Gennett subsidiary, Superior Records. The New Lost City Rambler's version is modeled after the version played by Tennesse's Fiddlin' Arthur Smith.
