GROVE [2], THE. Scottish, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. English collector Frank Kidson's version of the melody is from Edinburgh fiddler-composer and bandleader Alexander "King" McGlashan's Scots' Measures (c. 1781, dates vary). However, it was a popular tune that appears in many publications and musicians' manuscripts from the latter half of the 18th century. The jig (in D major) also appears in Edinburgh publisher Neil Stewart's Select Collection of Scots, English and Foreign Airs, Jiggs & Marches (1788), and in Charles and Stewart Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Country Dances (vol. 4, 1780), and in Samuel, Ann and Peter Thompson's Twenty-Four Country Dances for 1794. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of a tune by this name in Robert Ross's Choice Collection of Scots Reels (Edinburgh, 1780, p. 5). Another version of the tune, with a somewhat distanced second strain, was entered into the c. 1770 music copybook of fiddler William Clark of Lincoln.
In America, "The Grove" (in the key of 'D') appears in the music manuscript copybook of John Hoff (1776-1818), a flute player from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the 1793 copybook of George Otis, musician from Worcester, Massachusetts, and the 1789-1790 copybook of Cushing Eells, of Norwich, Connecticut. The melody was published in America in Salem, Massachusetts, by Joshua Cushing, in his The Fifer's Companion No. 1 (1805).
