GUILFORD POLKA. American, Polka. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Sweet (1964) notes the melody was in the repertoire of the Chester, Conn., Fife and Drum Corps. The title apparently honors the town of Guilford, Connecticut. The American town takes its name from Guilford, England, named by the Anglo-Saxons and meaning 'the gold ford', perhaps because of the marsh marigolds that grew in damp places (Matthews, 1972).
