HILTON LODGE. Scottish, Strathspey. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Surenne): AAB (most versions): AABB' (Kerr). Composed by the renowned Dunkeld, Perthshire, fiddler-composer Niel Gow (1727-1807). The Johnston family of Hilton were subscribers to Gow's Third Collection, for which he wrote several tunes in their honor, including "Hilton Lodge" and "Miss Johnston of Hilton's Fancy." The Johnston daughters, Lucy and Margaret, were musicians (See "annotation:Miss Lucy Johnston's Compliments to Niel Gow"). Margaret was married at Hilton Lodge to Robert Steuart Esq. of Alderston, "late of Calcutta", in the Spring of 1802.
