HOPKINSON'S FAVOURITE. English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). D Major (Clare): D Minor (Offord). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Hopinkson's Favourite" can be found in a music manuscript from the Lakeland district, now in the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library (Cecil Sharp House, London). The ms. has a few names and the date 1816, and an outer sheet (in a different hand than the inner sheets and tune titles) identifies one William Docker of Newby Head (Cumbria), although it is now known as the Matthew Betham ms. A major-mode version was entered as an untitled tune in the music manuscript collection of John Clare (1793-1864), of Helpston, Northhamptonshire.
