HUNT THE WHISTLE. English, Slip Jig (9/8 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was originally printed in Charles and Samuel Thompson's third country dance collection (London, 1773), a periodically issued compendium of their annual issues of 24 country dances. The slip jig was also entered into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.). "Hunt the Whistell" can also be found in the 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers, in the same key and time signature, albeit with some apparent errors in transcription.
