MRS. MONTGOMERY OF COILSFIELD. AKA and see "New Year's Day (1)," "Providence Sett Figure 3." Scottish, Jig (6/8 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest version of this tune in print in Ayshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1766 first collection (p. 39, reissued in 1782), printed in Edinburgh by Robert Bremner. A version of the same tune can be found as "New Year's Day (1)" in Alexander Reinagle's A Collection of the Most Favorite Scots Tunes published in 1782.

The Mrs. Montgomery of the title was Lilias, daughter and heir of Sir Robert Montgomerie, 4th Baronet of Skelmorlie, who married, in 1738, Alexander Montgomerie of Coilsfield, and was the mother of Hugh Montgomerie of Coilsfield, afterwards the 12th Earl of Eglinton (Robert Burns' "Sodger Hugh"). She died in 1783.
