MRS. MORAY OF ABERCAIRNIE/ABERCARNEY [1]. Scottish, Strathspey. D Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Surenne): AAB (most versions). A double tonic tune composed by Niel Gow (1727-1807). Mrs. Moray was Lady Christian Montgomery, the daughter of Alexander, 9th Earl of Eglinton, and the wife of James Moray of Abercairney (1705-1777). She bore her husband six children. The family was well known by and much admired by Gow--see his exceptional elegiac air “Lamentation for James Moray of Abercarney.”
