Irish, English, American; Hop Jig (9/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part (O'Flannagan, Raven): ABBCC (White): AABBC (Roche, O'Neill/1850 & 1001): AABBCC (Cole, Kerr, Tubridy): AABBCC' (O'Neill/Krassen). The tune was set to the words "Barney B(r)allaghan's Courtship" by Hudson, c. 1850, although the tune must have been in circulation prior to that for it was entered as an untitled slip jig in the music manuscript of East Anglian musician William Clarke (Feltwell, Norfolk) sometime in the first half of the 19th century. An early printing occurs in Patrick O'Flannagan's Hibernia Collection, published by Elias Howe in Boston in 1860 (O'Flnnagan was actually a pseudonym for Howe himself).
