REEL DE LA VEUVE (Widow's Reel). French-Canadian, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. The tune was recorded by Montreal fiddler Joseph Allard (1873-1947) with guitarist Frank Laforge for Victor records in 1928, and reissued in 1936 on the Bluebird label under Allard's pseudonym, Maxime Toupin. Researcher Jean Duval identifies Allard's "Reel de la veuve" as a version of the reel "Miss Thornton's Reel," and notes that Allard also recorded a "crooked" (asymmetrical) version under the title "Miss Thornton de Tenfant Allard," learned from his father. See also a version of "Reel de la veuve"/"Miss Thornton's" as the 2nd tune in "Sets canadiens (3b)," recorded by Georges Frappier in 1921.
